17. Ruins of Ancient Singapore

We have finally reached the last stop of Ah Gong's trail!

This last stop is the former summit of Fort Canning Hill!

Shortly after the founding of Singapore, Raffles had a house built here for himself and his sister’s family. There is an excellent view of the harbor, river and the city from the bungalow. After his death, the house became the official residence of the colonial governor, and the hill became known as Government Hill.

But in 1860, the former summit of Fort Canning was leveled in order to build a fortress. That fortress was then named after Viscount Canning, the then governor-general of Singapore, and this hill has since been called Fort Canning Hill.

The residence of the Governor was then moved to Leonie Hill where it remained until 1869 when a new Government House (current Istana) was completed.
